SARA has permission from the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department to host low power launches at Udall Park on specific dates. Attendance is currently limited to 10 individuals, so we will be announcing the dates on an invitation basis on the SARA members email list until pandemic restrictions are lifted.

These launches are limited to flights up to F motors, up to 1000 feet above ground level, and excluding clustered or staged rockets. This is not a blanket authorization for anyone to launch rockets in Udall Park or any other City of Tucson park, and these activities are prohibited without permission for City of Tucson Parks and Recreation. The site is open desert, with some cactus and debris throughout the recovery area. But it's a good area for rocket flights, with few tall trees and generally walkable terrain.

Parking for the launch site is off of Sabino Canyon Road, South of Tanque Verde Road. For driving directions, refer to this Google map: https://goo.gl/maps/CQtzYgrvHiyU5BDT7. From the overflow parking, across from Ramada, # 9 and southern baseball fields, follow the dirt trail 250 yards to the southeast. You can park near the softball fields or in the overflow parking lot during SARA launches at Udall Park.

Be sure to contact rangeops@sararocketry.org if you do not have your own launch equipment. SARA can provide launch equipment if needed.

SARA's July 2021 launch is scheduled for Saturday July 17 from 8 am - 11 at the SARA launch site near Picture Rocks.

    • In accordance with current CDC guidelines, facemasks are no longer required for fully vaccinated individuals.
    • Attendance limit is increased to 50.
    • The flush toilets at the TIMPA runway are now available again, so we have eliminated the port-a-potty on site and the associated $5 fee that was necessary during the height of the pandemic.
    • Pre-registration is required.  Attendance will be granted on a first come, first served basis, so sign up as soon as you can.
    • There is a waitlist available, so if you make a reservation and can't attend, please cancel your reservation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund so someone else can use your spot.
    • Please consider volunteering to work for an hour during the launch to help keep our launch running smoothly. You must be qualified to serve as LCO or RSO, but the other positions are available to anyone. We will close the range any time we do not have staffing to support the launch.
    • Public Health precautions in currently effect include:
      • Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear facemasks.
      • Facemasks are mandatory for unvaccinated individuals when away from your car.
      • Practice social distancing at all times--park every other space in the parking lot, and maintain 6 feet of space between you and others not in your group.
      • If you or anyone in your family are sick or may have been exposed to someone who's sick, stay home.
      • Consider staying home if you or any family member is at an increased risk of COVID-19 complications.

As always, while a specific waiver altitude and motor limit is expected, field and sky conditions at flight time may dictate restricted operations. Be sure to wear sunscreen, a hat, long pants and long sleeves, closed toe shoes, plenty of water, and always recover rockets with a partner. Watch out for gopher holes, snakes, and other desert hazards when recovering rockets.
