SARA has permission from the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department to host low power launches at Udall Park on specific dates. Attendance is currently limited to 50 individuals, so we will be announcing the dates on an invitation basis on the SARA members email list until pandemic restrictions are lifted. We request that unvaccinated individuals wear masks at outdoor SARA events. All individuals are encouraged to wear masks.

These launches are generally limited to flights up to D motors, up to 1000 feet above ground level, and excluding clustered or staged rockets. This is not a blanket authorization for anyone to launch rockets in Udall Park or any other City of Tucson park, and these activities are prohibited without permission for City of Tucson Parks and Recreation. The site is open desert, with some cactus and debris throughout the recovery area. But it's a good area for rocket flights, with few tall trees and generally walkable terrain.

Parking for the launch site is off of Sabino Canyon Road, South of Tanque Verde Road. For driving directions, refer to this Google map: https://goo.gl/maps/CQtzYgrvHiyU5BDT7. From the overflow parking, across from Ramada, # 9 and southern baseball fields, follow the dirt trail 250 yards to the southeast. You can park near the softball fields or in the overflow parking lot during SARA launches at Udall Park. Park staff usually open the gates to the black gravel overflow parking area, and if it is open, you are welcome to drive directly to the range head; the route and range head area are shown below in yellow.  Note that this range head area is about 100 meters east-northeast of our traditional range head at the garbage dumpster. This is an area that offers a better layout for vehicles and spectators.Udall Park Launch Area

SARA will provide launch equipment, including 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 inch launch rods and a 1010 launch rail.

SARA's December 2021 launch is scheduled for Sunday December 19 from 9 am - Noon at the SARA launch site near Picture Rocks.

    • Update Nov 18, 2021: SARA's board met in special session to discuss recent efforts to mitigate the overgrowth at the TIMPA launch site.  We anticipate being able to launch in December, after a 2 month hiatus, conditional on weather conditions, and size of motors, and type of rocket.  Considerations include:
      • Additional clearing of flammable materials around the pads will be needed; please arrive early to help, and bring tools like stirrup hoes, rakes, weed whackers or lawn mowers.
      • Weather conditions permitting, we anticipate ground conditions permitting flights of H motors and below.
      • High winds significantly increase risk of fire and may cause launch cancellation on the day of the launch.
      • We will need to avoid overflights of the north field.
    • Pre-registration is required.  Attendance will be granted on a first come, first served basis, so sign up as soon as you can.
    • There is a waitlist available, so if you make a reservation and can't attend, please cancel your reservation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund so someone else can use your spot.
    • Please consider volunteering to work for an hour during the launch to help keep our launch running smoothly. You must be qualified to serve as LCO or RSO, but the other positions are available to anyone. We will close the range any time we do not have staffing to support the launch.
    • Public Health precautions in currently effect include:
      • Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to wear facemasks.
      • Facemasks are mandatory for unvaccinated individuals when away from your car.
      • Practice social distancing at all times--park every other space in the parking lot, and maintain 6 feet of space between you and others not in your group.
      • If you or anyone in your family are sick or may have been exposed to someone who's sick, stay home.
      • Consider staying home if you or any family member is at an increased risk of COVID-19 complications.

As always, while a specific waiver altitude and motor limit is expected, field and sky conditions at flight time may dictate restricted operations. Be sure to wear sunscreen, a hat, long pants and long sleeves, closed toe shoes, plenty of water, and always recover rockets with a partner. Watch out for gopher holes, snakes, and other desert hazards when recovering rockets.
