I’m finishing up construction on a high power rocket kit. It will run on a G engine. It is 4ft tall, 3in diameter. I want to launch it this Saturday but I still have a few details that I need to address. Most important is that it seems heavy at the bottom. My understanding is that the weight of the rocket should be balanced about it’s center for best stability. Should I add weight to the nose cone? If so, do you have a suggestion as to what to use?

Another question: Should I drill small holes in the side of the rocket to keep the pressure change during flight from spontaneously popping out the nose cone. I read that this is important for the high powered rockets.

I have a number of other questions, but I think they can wait until the launch.

The most important thing to remember about stability is the relationship of the Center of Gravity (CG) and the Center of Pressure (CP). Your Center of Pressure must be atleast 1 caliber (the diameter of the airframe)BEHIND the Center of Gravity when the rocket is fully prepared for flight (motor installed).

If your CG:CP relationship is not correct and you do need to add nose weight I would determine how much you need to add and mix up some epoxy and add the appropriate ammount of lead shot to it. Then pour it into your nose cone.

You can find out more information at http://www.rocketryonline.com/ and going to the "infocentral" area.
