officers.
_____________________________________________________________
Hello Everybody,
First, thanks to all the folks who arrived early to help transfer equipment
from the barn to the launch site, helped set up the site, and helped tear
down the site at the launch completion. It made the day much easier for
me.
The December meeting will be our annual meeting to elect SARA's officers
and a member at large to sit on SARA's Board for 2001. SARA's officer
positions are President, Vice-President, and Secretary Treasurer. In all,
4 Board positions are open for election. Floor nominations and write-ins
will be accepted at the December meeting. You may nominate yourself. In
addition, the position of Senior Section Advisor will be open for
appointment by the new Board. The meeting will follow the launch at the
ramada near the RC field. A pot-luck will be held in conjunction with the
business meeting.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER LAUNCH RESULTS
SARA held a launch at TIMPA on October 28, 2000. The flight cards indicate
that attendance was down from typical with 13 people making 25 Flights.
David Williams had the most flights with 5, there was one person with 3, 6
people with 2 flights each and 5 flew a single flight. The overall clean or
nominal flight rate was 21/25 or 84% ; there were 2 tangled chutes, and 1
each separation and lawn dart. The motor usage was as follows: A - 5 , B -
2 , C - 7 , D - 3 , E - 1 , G - 8 , H - 1. There were 2 successful
2-stage flights
On November 19th, 2000 SARA had a launch at Timpa with a 4500 foot waiver.
Thirty three fliers took advantage of the beatiful launch conditions (cool,
sunny, nearly no wind and few aircraft holds) to make 75 flights of which
59 were nominal (clean) for a full success rate of 79%. There were 4
separations, 4 tangled recovery devices, 4 no ejection-deploy, and 1 each
shred, no stage, Cato and kicked motor. There were 3 certificaton atttempts
with a 2 flights being successful. Congratulations to the newly certified
fliers: Mark Koenig at level 2 and Gary Weisshaar from Phoenix at level 1.
Chris Wellborn made the most flights with 6, the remainder were, number of
people-number of flights, respectively; 1 - 5, 4 - 4, 4 - 3, 13 -2, and
10 - 1. Motor usage was as follows: 1/8 A (Micromax) - 1, A - 6, B - 13,
 C - 9, D - 14, E - 2, F - 12, G - 12, H - 8, I - 6, and J - 3.
There were 2 clustered flights one of which involved air starts (this later
flight suffered no ejection and lawn darted after successful ignition).
There were two 2-stage flights one of which was successful.
Thanks to Jerry King for "crunching" the numbers.
SAFETY ITEMS
It may be very dry at the launch site. Remember that FLAMEPROOF wadding
must be used. If you are not sure what is usable as wadding ask the range
safety officer. Toilet paper and paper towels are not acceptable as
wadding.
There is NO SMOKING permitted inside the fence line. Please limit your
smoking to the dirt road and place butts in a metal container or ashtray.
It is dry on the range so be careful with your smoking materials.
Fire is something we all need to take very seriously on the range. If you
see smoke or fire yell it out loud and clear. If we have a fire on the
range EVERYBODY needs to drop what they are doing and assist in containing
the fire. There are water bottles, a shovel, and extinguishers on the
range to carry to a fire. We also will have pails next to the 55 gallon
drum behind the range head. The barrel is also filled with water.
SPACE MODELING SOLUTIONS (SMS)
SMS will try to attend as most of our launches. Peter carries a varied
selection of model rocket products including kits and Aerotech motors. He
is carrying the Aerotech "Easy Access" high power motors. If you need
motors or some other supplies call Peter prior to the launch to make sure
he will be in attendance and that he has the item you need.

LAUNCH ACTIVITIES
Notification launches are launches where SARA notifies the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) that we will be flying models up to 3.3 pounds of
launch weight or containing up to 4.4 ounces of propellant. SARA does this
because of FAA requirements affecting model rockets over 1 pound of launch
weight or containing over 4 ounces of propellant.
Waivered launches are launches where the FAA has given SARA approval to
launch rockets that exceed the weight and propellant limits for model
rockets. Waivered launches at our field will accommodate high power models
that are in excess of 3.3 pounds launch weight or contain in excess of 4.4
ounces of propellant. A maximum of "K" motor power is permitted and the
model may not exceed 4500 feet AGL (above ground level). You must be high
power certified by the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) or Tripoli
Rocket Association (TRA) to participate in high power rocketry. High power
flyers must show proof of current membership in the NAR or TRA and their
certification level.
TIMPA collects a $3.00 range fee per launching individual (SARA extends
this to include families with children under 18. If you are over 18 please
pay the $3.00). The launch fee only needs to be paid once per launch day
(as many flights as you care to make).
A flight card needs to be filled out for each flight. All models require
inspection by the RSO before placing them on the launch pad. Rockets
without a safety inspection must be removed from the launch pad.
Flying of rockets at the TIMPA site is only permitted at club events or by
arrangement. Fliers who intend to use the field outside of club events
must be either NAR or AMA members. Arrangements will require a request in
advance to use the field and will include the number of models and the
maximum launch and propellant weights to be flown. Requests for use will
be sent to Stephen Lubliner (e-mail to 103056.621@compuserve.com or call to
make arrangements at 296-1689). The caretakers have been instructed to
call the sheriff and pursue trespassing charges if no previous arrangements
for rocket launching at the site exist.
DIRECTIONS TO LAUNCH SITE (From I-10 and Speedway, exit 257)
A) West on Speedway past the ARCO AM-PM. Continue on Speedway through
Gate's Pass (Speedway turns into Gate's Pass Road). Use caution; the road
is narrow, winding, and shared by bicyclists.
B) Right onto Kinney Road; follow the signs towards the Desert Museum.
This intersection is approximately 9.2 miles from the ARCO AM-PM. Follow
Kinney Road onto Mile Wide Road (this occurs approximately 1 mile after the
Desert Museum). Kinney is the minor spur which heads off to the Saguaro
National Park. Stay to the left on the major road (Mile Wide).
C) Continue on Mile Wide Road to Sandario. This intersection is
approximately 6 miles from the Kinney/Gates Pass intersection.
D) Continue on Mile Wide across Sandario. Mile Wide will turn to dirt
after the second bridge (both bridges are single lane, use caution).
E) Right onto Reservation from Mile Wide (forced turn). This is about
3.5 miles from the Sandario/Mile Wide intersection.
F) The main TIMPA driveway is on the right about 1 mile from the
forced right turn. Go past the driveway approximately 1/2 mile. Make a
right onto the dirt road. Proceed about 1/4 mile and park off to the left.
