**LAUNCH PAD CHAT FROM THE EDITOR

SARA members assisted with a rocketry outreach event in Rio Rico on 21 July 2004. The event was sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, Nogales School District, and Rio Rico School District. The sponsorships allowed over 80 individuals from the Nogales and Rio Rico area to build, fly, and keep a beginner's model rocket at no charge to the participant. A large thanks to the SARA members who participated in this worthwhile event; the SARA participants were Jerry King, Bob "The Battery Man" (sorry about the last name Bob), Ken Weaver, Ben Nead, and myself. Assisting the SARA members were cadets from Colonel Robert Anderson's Junior ROTC class at Nogales High School and Sara (good name) Falconer from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). This was the second year for the event and plans are being made to do it again in 2005.

Another opportunity for rocketry outreach is starting in September. The Team America Rocketry Competition (TARC) will announce its competition for the 2004 - 2005 school year. This will be the third time the competition will be held. In the past years contestants had to launch a two staged rocket carrying two eggs to an exact altitude (1250 feet last year). This year is similar except the precision requirement is for duration instead of altitude. Outreach opportunities include mentoring a junior or high school school team that wants to participate in the competition and/or witnessing the school's competition qualification flight. If you have questions, Jerry king and Jay Dennis are SARA members who have previously assisted TARC teams.

Finally, SARA is 10 years old. I found emails from Tad Morgan in September of 1994 that were discussing the organization of a rocket club in Tucson.
To celebrate this milestone SARA is planning an all day launch event in January of 2005. Stay tuned to this letter for further information.

Keep the flaming end pointed down!
